Last night's AI mentor was Dolly Parton: Singer, songwriter, and mega-hit producing country star. Her voice is as big as her... well you know, hair! And her heart and persona shines right out of your TV and into your living room.
First the highlights. The night's theme, country, didn't seem to be Simon's favorite-- prompting Ryan to ask him "what's going on??!" Well...it takes Simon a bit to warm up. And he did when David Archuleta strolled in. His voice session with Dolly were endearing. He sang Dolly's Smokey Mountain Memories. For such a young guy, he really knows how to connect with a song and show his emotions without fear. Awesome for anyone- especially a seventeen year old. And those dreamy hazel eyes pierce right through the screen. No one could miss the shrills of his female fans......
David Cooke launched into the high and haunting song "Little Sparrow" and it sounded awesome. He's on a roll. Randy says he has an unbelievable range and showed it off.... It was hot! Paula talked about his haircut and then complimented him on his "well-roundedness". Hmm, we'll figure that out later. Simon said it was not as good as last week, but he made a song about sparrows good, so "congratulations."
Michael Johns sang "It's So Wrong, but It's So Right". Michael sounded so good! Jazzy, bluesy, sexy. Randy thinks it was blazin' hot, Paula incoherently said he was awesome and Simon thought it was the best he'd sung so far. Agree!
And besides her clothing malfunction-- Carly Smithson sang "Here You Come Again". She just knows how to sing the heck out of a song. She had amazing tone and control, and it felt like she pushed herself. Randy thought it was to be one of the better performances of the night. Paula freaked out about how wonderful she sounded and Simon told Carly it was just OK, and that she should.....wait for it-- "talk to whoever is dressing her because at this point she should look like a star and he just don't see it." Wow. Nice.
Those were our faves for the night, what did you think? Stay tuned tonight for the results. Ramiele, Syesha and Jason are likely to be in the bottom three. And thank goodness the show's only an hour long....Paula has barely any time to get her thoughts out. The chemistry between the judges is just right and thus entertaining; Randy's the mellow one, Paula is the loopy one, and Simon? Well everyone loves to hate him!
